Yesterday I decided to drive my Maverick to work. It ran great Saturday to the central cruise and back so I figured its time to start driving it more often. I get about 8 miles from home and it just turns off. It would restart so I coast into a parking lot.
First thing I check is if Im getting fuel since Ive recently redosn the entire fuel fuel system. I pump the throttle by hand and fuel squirts from the accelerator pump squirters. Next I check if the rotor is turning. I have had a distributor drive gear sheer on me before. So I pop the cap off and crank it over and thats spinning.
The problem is definitely in the iginition system. I run an MSD A9L, MSD Pro Billet Disctributor, and a Blaster coil. While waiting for my tow truck I check over the basics, fuse, relay, connections. All seems good.
So this weekend I will be tracking down the issue. First off seeing if the ignition is getting triggered by the ignition switch. then moving on to checking the coil and the MSD box itself and the pickup coil. I hope its something simple and cheap.

Havent even popped the hood since I pushed it in the driveway. But the inlaws are gone after a 3 week visit now so I should be able to get a look at it this weekend.

Life has a funny way of dictating what we have time for.

Ive finally poked around the Maverick a while and found all the wiring to be good and getting power where I should be. But im not not anything out of the MSD box. I found some test procedures on MSDs website and tech forum. And it all leads to a bad box. I guess 15 years for a MSD 6AL is above average life span for those. Time to find a replacement, have a lead on a cheap slightly used Crane box I might try.

I finally had the time and the new (used) MSD box to put in my Maverick. Last night I wired in the new box and the car fired up. Now I just need to put some new wire loom over everything and its ready to go. Oh ya I need to pay for some new tags too, they expired while the car was sitting all this time.

Hey Ryan, long time since we spoke. I am the guy from Lake Havasu that has the Yellow Fever 1970 Maverick. Working down in Deer Valley now during the week, Havasu on the weekends. Still have the Mav, building some Rat Rods now. I see Gene is also here. I hope to bring the Maverick down when it cools off a little more. Maybe we can bump into each other sometime at a show or cruise.

Hey Steve. We were just talking about you the other weekend at Gene's place. Saw a picture of the Yellow Fever up in his garage. If you ever stay in town on a Saturday we can all meet up at the 67ave and Bell car show. A few of us will be there this weekend with our mavericks. And I still want to go for a helicopter ride someday. ;D
